Sunset ride or private ride? How to choose
Both of our horseback rides start in the village of San José Manialtepec, about 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido, and both use the same calm, well-cared-for horses. The routes, the timing and the feel of the day are quite different, though. Here is how to choose.
The sunset ride: river, jungle and beach
The shared sunset ride is our classic. Pickup is at 3:00 PM and you are back at your hotel by 7:00 PM. The route crosses three landscapes. First you follow a shallow river, then you climb into a patch of jungle, and finally you come out onto a wide Pacific beach in time for golden hour.
- Price: $1,850 MXN per person
- Group: shared with other riders, minimum 2 participants
- Best for: first-time riders, couples, and anyone who wants a sunset on horseback without planning a whole day around it
The private ride: horses that swim
The private ride is just your group with a personal guide, and it goes further. You cross the Manialtepec River twice, and on the second crossing you will get a bit wet. Then you reach a branch of Manialtepec Lagoon, where small crocodiles often bask in the mangroves. There you dismount and cross by boat while your horses swim alongside. It is the moment people talk about afterwards.
On the other side you ride the sands of Puerto Suelo beach, with an optional gentle gallop if you feel comfortable. You also stop at a local restaurant for a complimentary drink (water, mezcal or beer).
- Price: $2,400 MXN per person, minimum 2 participants
- Times: 8:00 AM or 3:00 PM departure, about 4 hours plus the drive
- Minimum age: 8 years, riding their own horse
- Best for: families, special occasions, and riders who want more adventure and personal attention
Morning or afternoon?
The shared ride is always in the afternoon, built around the sunset. The private ride gives you a choice. The 3:00 PM departure ends with a sunset ride along the beach and a return under the stars, sometimes with fireflies along the trail. The 8:00 AM departure is cooler and leaves your afternoon free for the beach. It is a good pick if you're also booking an evening tour like the bioluminescence lagoon.
How wet will I get?
On the sunset ride the river crossing is shallow, so expect splashes rather than a soaking. On the private ride, plan to get wet: there are two river crossings and the lagoon crossing. Either way, bring a change of clothes for the drive home.
Quick decision guide
- First time on a horse and on a budget? Sunset ride.
- Celebrating a birthday, anniversary or proposal? Private ride at 3:00 PM.
- Traveling with kids aged 8 or older? Private ride, so the guide can go at your family's pace.
- Want the most adventure? Private ride. The swimming horses are worth it.
Whichever you pick, read what to wear for the ride. Long pants and closed-toe shoes make a big difference.
