How much does horseback riding cost in Puerto Escondido?
"How much is it?" is usually the first question people ask about a horseback ride, and it deserves a straight answer. Below you'll find exactly what our two rides from San José Manialtepec cost, what that money covers, what isn't included, and the things that make any horseback ride in Puerto Escondido cost more or less. We won't quote other operators' prices: they change, and we can't vouch for them. What we can do is help you compare like with like.
Our prices at a glance
We run two rides, both from the village of San José Manialtepec, about 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido. Prices are in Mexican pesos and per rider.
- Sunset ride (shared): $1,850 MXN per person. Hotel pickup at 3:00 PM, back by 7:00 PM. River, jungle and beach at sunset, shared with other riders, minimum 2 participants.
- Private ride: $2,400 MXN per person. Just your group and a personal guide, with an 8:00 AM or 3:00 PM departure. Two river crossings, the horses swim across a branch of the lagoon beside your boat, then Puerto Suelo beach and a drink stop at a local restaurant.
So for two people, the sunset ride comes to $3,700 MXN and the private ride to $4,800 MXN. For a group of four, it's $7,400 MXN or $9,600 MXN. The difference is $550 MXN per rider, and what it buys is the subject of our comparison of the sunset ride and the private ride.
What the price includes
Both rides include the same essentials, so the price is the full cost of the outing rather than a starting point:
- Round-trip transport from your hotel or Airbnb
- A four-hour guided ride
- A well-maintained horse and saddle
- A riding helmet
- A bilingual guide who knows the local ecology
- Bottled water
On the private ride, the boat crossing at the lagoon and the drink at the restaurant are part of the route, not add-ons.
What isn't included
A few things are up to you, and it's better to know before the day:
- Tips. Tips aren't part of the price. In Mexico it's customary to tip guides when you're happy with the service, and the amount is entirely your call. If you want to tip the guide and the horse owner separately, small bills in pesos make it easy.
- Food. No meal is included. You're back at your hotel around 7:00 PM on the sunset ride and very hungry, so plan dinner nearby.
- What you bring. Sunscreen, insect repellent, long pants and closed-toe shoes are yours to bring. There is nothing to rent on site. Our guide to what to wear for the ride explains why each item matters.
What makes a horseback ride cost more or less?
If you're comparing several rides in and around Puerto Escondido, the headline price only tells part of the story. These are the things that really move it.
Shared or private
A shared ride splits the guide's time and the logistics between more riders, so it costs less per person. A private ride gives your group the guide, the pace and often the schedule, and it costs more. Neither is "better"; it depends on whether you want the most affordable sunset on horseback or a ride built around your group.
Duration and route
A short walk along one stretch of sand and a four-hour ride through a river, jungle and beach are different products, even if both are called "horseback riding". Check how long you'll actually be in the saddle, not just how long the outing lasts, and where you'll ride. Longer and more varied routes take more of the horses' and guides' day, and that shows in the price.
Transport
Some rides start at the stables and leave getting there to you. Ours include round-trip pickup from your hotel or Airbnb. If a ride doesn't include transport, add the cost and the hassle of a taxi there and back, and of finding the stables, before you compare.
Group size and minimums
Prices are usually per person, but minimums change the real cost. Our sunset ride needs at least 2 participants. If you're traveling solo, message us on WhatsApp and we'll try to pair you with another group.
Horse care
Feeding, farrier work, vet care and rest days are a large part of what a ride costs to run. A price far below what other rides charge can mean corners are cut somewhere, and the horses are usually the first place it shows. Our guide to choosing an ethical horseback tour lists what to look at and what to ask.
Is the private ride worth the extra?
For many people, the sunset ride is the right choice: it's the classic route, it's beginner-friendly, and the sunset from the saddle is the same whether you share it or not. The private ride is worth the extra $550 MXN per person when:
- you're traveling with children aged 8 or older and want the guide to set the pace for your family (our post on horseback riding with kids goes into the details);
- you're celebrating something and want the ride to yourselves;
- you'd rather ride in the cooler morning and keep your afternoon free;
- you want the lagoon crossing, with the horses swimming beside your boat.
How to book and pay
Both rides are booked and paid on our main site, puerto-escondido.mx, through the buttons on this page. Choose the ride, your date and the number of riders, and the total is shown before you pay. The price on the booking page is the one that applies, so if it ever differs from a blog post, trust the booking page.
A few money-saving habits that don't involve cutting corners:
- Ask before you book. Questions about weight, children or riding solo are free to ask and save you from booking the wrong ride.
- Book ahead in high season. Around Christmas, New Year and Easter, Puerto Escondido is busy and the date you want can fill up.
- Dress right. Long pants and proper shoes cost nothing extra and make four hours in the saddle far more comfortable.
